Launching the Workboat |
Today we were launching and retrieving the Workboat and FRC in preperation for search and rescue operations in the Weddell Sea. In ideal conditions as the pictures indicate, it took us 10 minutes to recover the practice dummy. In the Falkland Island, which exhibit much less than ideal conditions and due to the extremely low water temperature (3-6 degrees C) we have approximately five minutes to recover a man in the water.

The beautiful blue water and clear skies of the South American Coast are gradually giving way to the cloudy and cold southern ocean. The temperature has dropped approximately 10 degrees in the last two days as we progress south. We are all spending as much time on deck as we can as it will become too cold to spend leisure time on deck in the next few days. Our Temperature in the Falklands is expected to be about 12-15 degreesC or about 40 degrees in our numbers.
It amazes me how water shows its character. In as shorth a time as this morning when the pictures above were taken until this aftertnoon, as we transition from the tropics to the Southern Ocean the water, which was a warm turquoise color, has taken on the unforgiving and icy blue tint you expect to see in icebergs. Scuttlebutt is we shall probably see some growlers (small icebergs) off of the coast of the Falklands. I hope this is so... I would like to say I've seen the ice in both hemispheres. This change in climate is amazingly drastic, even from yesterday evening. As mentioned earlier we have had a significant temperature drop in the last 24 hours. I should have packed more sweaters. Note to self pack warm clothes when working in the polar climates...
ReplyDeleteI think i suggested that...don't think i can get Land's end to helicopter you sweaters at this point. Layer, layer, layer!
